Hi! I work in packaging. You actually might not be able to recycle that. Its primarily paper, but its lined with either a foil or, more likely, plastic coating to prevent the paper from breaking down. Whether it's actually recycable depends on what the lining is specifically, your recycling systems ability to handle layered materials, and how your recycling system separates materials. Most use optical sensors that identify common objects. So even if your recycling system can recycle layered paper packaging, like juice boxes, its not going to be set up to identify a torn sunscreen tube.

If you have to separate all of your recycles by category (multi stream vs single stream, where all recyclables just go in one bin), you may have a better chance of getting it recycled.

The good news, though, is its like 99% paper. Even if it goes to a landfill versus gets recycled, its 99% better for the environment than a plastic tube that would almost certainly end up in the landfill also. Packaging like this is a fantastic step in the right direction. I hope we see a ton more packaging like this across all categories.

I do this with plastic tubes too. I cut the plastic tube when I get to the bottom & use the top half to cover the bottom while I use the rest up.

I do that with everything and a pair of scissors 😂

I cut the tube diagonally so I can scoop to the bottom of the tube and still fit it together so the air doesn’t dry it out. I can get about 2-4 weeks out of it. Gotta save when you can. Skincare is so pricey but you can save this way.

I actually cut across my tubes when running low on product. I can then access product in bottom above opening and that stuck in the top. You can then slide the top part over the bottom part to make it airtight once again and take your time using the rest that’s inside. You’re definitely right. There’s usually quite a bit left inside.

After you rip open the packaging there's nothing covering the sunscreen...so it's opened to air. It will prob dry out before you can use it for the 3rd time. Does it?

Actually i prefer harder packaging that i still cut, but i can continue to use it instead of ripping it off like that and risking that the product dries out

I started cutting my plastic moisturisers when there’s “nothing” left and it’s surprising how much is actually left. Then to stop it drying out until it’s finished, I pop it into a ziplock bag.
