Thanks for great info. What if you cant get the linkage out? Im at this point. Cant feel ot real close up to faceplate hole! Drain wont open now. Please help! Cant afford plumber!

Can you add a trip lever to a tub that currently just has the overflow plate?

Is there supposed to be a gap underneath where the plate goes? At the bottom of it where it's sealed against the tub after you install the trip lever? Sorry I don't know how to explain it. There's a gap about a fourth of an inch under ours, under the bottom where the trip lever plate is but everything else is flush against the tub. It looks like that trip leave her plate was installed too high because of that gap underneath but my brother-in-law told us it's supposed to be like that but I think that is the reason why water is leaking down into our kitchen.

ok..so can i eliminate this "jig of a plug member" and just unscrew the floor drain and put a push button drain in? (Foot drain area.)
