I've had Malamutes for about 25yrs, they act more like oversized cats than dogs, can be quite aloof and stubborn, prone to random bursts of energetic activity (commonly called zoomies). Very intelligent, makes training a little tricky because they pick up things fast, however they generally only follow commands when there's something in it for them (highly food motivated). They are quick to figure out how to open doors and gates, and will pick up on your verbal and physical cues in no time. Recall is fun, they have very selective hearing. In my experience they are quite friendly toward other dogs, however something about their stance tends to provoke other breeds, so cautious introductions are critical. Because of how fast they grow, you need to be careful to avoid injuries to the joints when they are young, especially the hips.

Love the breed. We have one (almost 8 months now) and he is so adorable. We got him when he was 7 weeks old. Very smart yet stubborn sometime, affectionate and friendly dog. A bit of a hard work on him but worth it because he brings us a lot of joy and everyone who meets with him. We feel like we have an alive stuffed animal. He looked like that since day one, even now when he is bigger, just a bigger version and we love that.

Working as a mailman I had the pleasure of having one of these friendly giants greet me regularly. Wonderful animals.

Our neighbors adopted a male malamute. We were good friends with this family. The dog adopted our family was well to protect. He often walked me home through the woods as a teenager. When we were younger, the neighbor kids and I decided to go sledding down a big hill.we got tired of dragging the sled up the hill and got a great idea. We hitched the dog to the sled and he happily carted it up the big hill for us, while we had the joy of riding it down.

I had my adored baby girl for almost 17 years! So easy to live with. She was a big girl, 95 pounds. I think we ahared the lead position, but it worked for us. Malamutes are not for everyone, but for the right person they are amazing.

I use verbal commands and everything we do they have no issue I keep it stern and consistent. Like most breeds they do require warming up before they will reach their potential on a daily day basis.

Worked in Northern Canada for a year and one of my coworkers owned one of these. Absolutely beautiful dog. Unfortunately my coworker only bought it for the clout, and didn't bother training it or giving it the exercise and attention it needed. The dog would constantly pee inside and resource guard food and drink from both other dogs as well as myself and other coworkers on the base, and it's behavior only worsened as it got older and bigger. Beautiful dogs and amazing companions if you are willing to put in the effort to train them, but if you don't think you can, you are much better off going with a more docile breed.

My girlfriend has a female Mal who was 7 before we moved in together. No training, poorly socialized with other animals, and mostly left alone in the backyard. I spent every day with her for a month before moving in to our new place and she is one of the most well behaved dogs I’ve ever seen. I’ve noticed she responds very well to physical commands, and combining with verbal lets her know I when I’m serious lol

I'm loving this breed, I'd love a "horse" to pull my carriage or sled lol but get to stay inside my home instead of a barn ;) Oh and he turns into a giant teddy bear too, so cuddly. If we get an Alaska Malamute, we got a dog, horse, and bear in one. Great deal.

I had a female years ago. Sweet natured, very clever, strong as an ox (did a 2100 lb. dry pull), never barked but "sang" a lot. At the same time, I had a Siberian and a Husky/Mal mix and they were a great pack together.

Male mutes can weigh a lot more than 85 pounds they get along quite well with other pets. If I ever wanted to train puppies I would use the one you would think that doesn't get along with puppies he puts them on their place but is not overly aggressive perfect for raising puppies

My Alaskan Malamute is 12, 90 lbs., Red/White. An eternal puppy, always wants to play. If introduced as puppy to other pets, no problems. Can be an issue if later. Beware of dog parks, some of the dogs haven't been socialized thus will attack. This will cause major problems for you. If you have a garden put up a fence and block anywhere they could dig under it. Your garden is food for them. If live in a hot zone may have to plan an indoor space for them. Given all of this, they are the best dogs in the world. Smart, loyal, great around kids. Just for info, they will protect you from any attack, man or beast.

Best dog I've known was half labrador, she wasn't 'big' but very athletic. Only issue was she would kill alot, rabbit's up to coyotes. She was hyper intelligent also attentive to 'my' verbal commands.

Lmao they don't obey verbal commands and strong restraining equipment?

Oh boy, I have a Mally who understands verbal commands perfectly fine and trots next to me. You just need to put in more work than a standard pooch like a Labrador, Springer and so on. The responsible purchasing advice doesn't work out either, the show standard dogs have been repeatedly bred until they develop health issues (German Shepherds with their spines and hips, Pugs and Bulldogs with respiratory problems, Giant Malamutes with issues brought about by their size and weight...) I have a Malamute from a family pet, he has no issues what so ever and is healthier than the local show Malamute and has a far better temperament. In addition genetic issues can be passed on from the mother or father even of they themselves by recessive genes, this won't show up on health checks.
