How I create Anime-Style Textures in 3D

After a ton of studying and experimenting, I've now developed an exciting technique to create 100% procedural anime-style materials and textures. Turns out it's not that hard!

I've done a ton of researching and studying, and I've found a style that seems to really work when creating 3d anime-style scenes using Substance Painter. These techniques can be applied to basically any project. I'm really looking forward to improving the process later on this month.

This is going to be an ongoing series where I explore different texturing techniques you can use to achieve an anime aesthetic, so make sure to sign up before the price goes up!

The environment is from Kristof Dedene's gumroad, you can download it here:

I decided to make the first half free on Youtube so you guys could at least learn the basics, but if you want to REALLY learn how these materials work, you can grab the rest of the tutorial here at a reduced price:

to creat the "moss mask" just use another fill black mask and another generator "world space normals"
light generator could also work if u turn ur light the right way.
or a mix of the position generator with world normals

You should've mentioned this is not the full thing in the beginning, why make us waste our time?

Love this! I added a bit of height to one of the brush strokes layers and the edge detect layer and it makes it look even more like paint strokes (closer to oils than the gouache of Studio Ghibli, but I'm going for kinda of a hand painted Little Nightmares feel and the chunky paint looks GREAT!)

Thanks for a great tutorial!

Thank you for giving us this concept for free! That's what i love about the 3D Community, everyone is just so passionated to share theire knowledge with the community to ensure a generation of competend and inspired artists. You showed us the basic concept of the shader and that is totally enough to create awesome art and to figure the rest out by oneselves.

Thx man. I just discovered Substance through your channel and I was in extreme need of a way to create textures for my 3D game models. Its such a joy to work with this tool and I thank u for putting out some of your tutorials for free. Considering to buy the 3D artist coloring book.

Very cool...

I was looking for tutorials that'll teach me how to make good game art and I finally found a channel and the best thing is, it is focusing on stylized art! I would love to see how that grass was made though, would love to have a grass like that in my game :D

Edit: checking the description does help sometimes... 😅

I think you meant that its a fully procedural material, not PBR

Amazing, thanks for doing this.
Quick question, any plans to do a breakdown of that grass? I really love how it looks. Something tells me that it's geometric planes, it's not using an alpha, is my suspicion correct?
