Basic Atomic Structure: A Look Inside the Atom

To see all my Chemistry videos, check out

What does the inside of an atom look like? Here, we'll look at the subatomic particles ( protons, neutrons, and electrons) that make up the atom. We'll see how the electrons orbit the nucleus, and talk about the masses of protons, neutrons, and electrons in amu, or atomic mass unit.

Clearly, you're 100% right about the science. But I also spend a lot of time working with people who are learning Chemistry for the first time, and from my experience as a teacher, I know it's very unlikely that a 13 year-old will have any idea what you mean when you describe an electron as a "stationary wave with its maximum around the nucleus." I know I'm simplifying here and I know you're technically right, but a perfect explanation isn't worth anything if students can't understand any of it.

I learn more from Youtube than from my teachers.

55 seconds in and you have said more than my physics teacher will ever explain. Thank you so much. I have just adopted you as my teacher! 😚😄 thanks!

I must say, this video is so simplified, my exams is just a week away and this is a life saver. I wish you had videos on Sub-Atomic Particles...

I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm going back to school in my 40s and your videos are so much clearer than my lectures. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Tyler, Thank you for doing this and your other videos. I felt so overwhelmed looking at chemistry, but you explain these topics so simply and in a way that I can grasp so THANK YOU!

I love it when a TEACHER has these engaging, motivating, and especially instructive abilities that not every TEACHER possesses. I appreciate this during this time where I need to get information for my entrance exam.

Thank you, professor Tyler

I like how you went in depth when decribing the charges of the partacles of an atom and the movement.

Great way to explain something I couldn't comprehend on paper brilliant thanks for making your video

yeah, that's sort of true, but atoms don't vary in size *that* much. like a hydrogen atom has a radius of 53 pm (picometers), and a uranium atom has a radius of 81 pm. so maybe it would be 1 million vs. 1.2 million or 1.5 million, but it's not like it's gonna be 1 million vs. 10 million or 100 million.
