Reason this is not being used in video games is imagine a shit load of explosives, animations, A.I, ray tracing and water simulation happening at the same time.

You will get 0 fps per second, this demo had all its resources going toward the ray tracing and water simulation, not all the other systems that a commercial video game has (scripts, explosions etc)

This will be the next generation of gaming, he said.
It would be amazing, he said.

damn... when i watch NVidia demos i need to have a fucking water refrigerator next to me. now i am thirsty. thanks JEN!

Raytracing (think multiple surfaces reflecting light into each other or light refracting through transparent objects) is usually something that has to be pre-rendered before we see it. You have to set up lights and then let the computer calculate it and create an image for each frame. Being able to view raytracing in real time while a fluid sim plays and is also raytraced... that's phenomenal.

They forgot to make some water droplets stick to the sides after splashing. Water adheres to glass after all.

Remember Luminous Studio:
Path tracing, including real-time bidirectional path tracing via rasterisation, bidirectional sampling, and artifact suppression technique for glossy surfaces
Ray tracing solutions, including ray tracing approximation.

I agree, thank god there's two such companies competing because they are pumping out groundbreaking hardware faster and faster. Competition breeds excellence.

Ray tracing is based on the principle of light rays travelling through space until they reach our eyes. Instead of using normal maps and shadow projections to render a scene, ray tracing actually sends (virtual) rays from the camera towards the scene, where they get reflected and/or refracted.
As the ray travels, it accumulates color-information and - as soon as the ray's life ends - determines its brightness depending on any obstacles between the ray and the nearest light sources.

Reflection inside reflection inside reflection.. thats impressive stuff!.

Well you also reach a point where the power of the machine exceeds the amount of detail people are willing to put into the game.

Truly amazing what the future will bring into games.

It's been used for years in every pixar's movie :P
In fact the technique is pretty old, but its computational requirements are so damn high that just nowadays real time rendering is becoming possible.

The first game with a raytracing engine WAS an FPS game, and even though I don't know the release date, it was around in 2007. It's completely restricted to tracing spheres, but with only those you can do cool things too.

And if you stick to analytic formulas, you can do raymarching. Not quite the same, not as exact, but a lot faster and way better than good enough for graphics. Check Muon Baryon for example. And tons of other 4k intros. Realtime, today, amazing quality.

I'm with you brother, this is something really impressive, is much more than just simple effects, this is one of the most complex effects ever created, being rendered in real time by a single GPU.

I was almost replying with full throttle skepticism while I went on watching the next parts of the nVidia event, and... wow. I still need to see it working with my eyes, because it's gonna take a whole fucking lot of infrastructures to make it available to the big numbers, but man... cloud done that way really changes the game. I'm extremely impressed and I hope they'll make it happen. Nice link, cheers.

How are you not impressed at something that is being done in real time that took you 5 hours to do on your ancient computers? You of all people should be impressed by this old man.

Getting thirsty when watching the water. A good sign that this really looks amazing.

Oh God, I'll never get trough games with this level of detail. I'll probably just run around, trowing shit in water for hours.
