I think the best piece of advise I got was to stop comparing yourself to everyone else and what they think you should do. You truly have to do what works for you and your family/child/baby.

Every child is different and unique. What works for him/her may (not) work for anybody else. Just enjoy the process.

I would think it would be better to create a positive experience for such a life long habit as brushing your teeth. When you brush your teeth make it fun and exciting, then include your kid. Start young without even needing to brush. Exaggerate each step and have the child copy you. Praise their efforts, ask to check, if no then a couple days without a scrub down wont cause damage but may increase trust and confidence in the situation. And if you first ask your toddler to check Your teeth they may be more willing to let you check theirs. Toddlers always want to do what you're doing. They just don't want to be forced.
