I finally got it working. For anyone who sees this and has the error on Nintendo Switch check your system clock and make sure it's the same time as the region you are in. I hadn't played my switch in a while and because of daylight savings my time was off by an hour. As soon as I corrected that choosing the 'set via internet' option it started working. Not sure if this would work for other consoles or PC but its worth a try. Hope this helps some of you. Good luck!

Make sure your switch is set at the correct date and time. This was my issue. Time travelling in Animal crossing. Lol.
