With Vai teaching i feel like I'm learning guitar and becoming a monk at the same time.

After 30 years of playing, seeing these types of lessons from Steve (and also from Satch and EJ) are such a treat and a very amazing experience both mentally, emotionally, and spiritually! For me, it's like finally climbing some mysterious mountain to a misty Temple of Guitar where the gods have been dwelling and FINALLY being able to hear them teach DIRECTLY their own ideas, which before, I could only learn from their records and tapes (remember them? LOL!), magazines, books, tab, and perhaps and REH or Hotlicks VHS tape here or there if I was lucky to see one as a kid. Truly such a wonderful experience to see these so many years after literally "worshiping" these guys like Guitar Religious Icons or Saints, etc. etc. Thank you Guitar World! Been reading your mag since the 80's.

Steve's teaching you to play like yourself. And, god, that is what the world so desperately needs. Genuine self expression. If you play like yourself, there's nothing more original.

Most guitarists are great performers but not so good teachers...

Steve Vai is both great performer AND teacher!

Steve Vai is the perfect example of no matter how great you are at something, there is always room to improve and to always practice no matter what. Practice does NOT make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect and you never stop practicing perfectly. Steve is such a gentle soul with so much knowledge and wisdom that he freely gives out to the world through YouTube. God bless you sir, you will be celebrated for eternity.

Steve Vai: I'm not interested in being a really fast shredding picker.
Also Steve Vai: *Is Steve Vai*

Steve Vai, John Petrucci, and Paul Gilbert are such amazing players as well as teachers, so much amazing knowledge. Satriani as well who taught Vai from when he was basically a kid, is the Godfather of them all. I miss the glory days of G3, all the ones I mentioned as well as Eric Johnson, and Yngwie.

Most obviously, he's a phenomenal player. But man... huge value in this video is just from his beingness. Love it. Appreciate it. Thank you

Looking at these videos i came to the conclusion that the better the musician, the more fundamental are the things they focus on. This dude has been a deity in my life for 17 years now

This is gold. Back in the early 90s I would buy Guitar magazine at Strawberry records and Vai would be in a lot of them with some great interviews. To ever think you could have a free lesson with this virtuoso now just blows me away. Thank you for sharing.

Steve Vai is a NATURAL teacher, Not only is he one of the best guitar players in the world, but he has such an ability to teach in a way that is super informative and makes the student understand things from so many different approaches. I've been playing and reading Guitar World for over 30 years, and Steve has ALWAYS been a staple instructor. And it's not just.."hey, this is the pentatonic scale"...it's more like the in depth instruction on tone, technique, listening, exercises, and practice for improvement. He's the best at it, and bravo to Guitar World for always having him in the forefront of teaching

The net is full of so much crap and then you come across something like this!
15 minutes of a master distilling a lifetime of playing (and practicing!) into little nuggets of information and inspiration - thank you!

I'm a drummer and been for 15 years but I always wanted to play the guitar. And this person is just... wow. I mean I was born in this industry and never have I ever heard such clear musical wisdom in my life.

Every time I think I've been [fully] amazed by the nuance of Steve Vai, he goes ahead and opens my mind just a little bit more.
