Oerlikon 35mm: Guardian Of The Sky | Overview

Developed in the 1960s by Oerlikon Contraves, the Oerlikon GDF or Oerlikon 35 mm twin cannon is one of the most popular anti-aircraft systems in the world, with more than 30 countries in use. Having undergone many upgrades, modern variants of this air defense system can not only fire conventional 35mm anti-aircraft ammunition, but also programmable munitions.

The Oerlikon 35 mm is classified as a towed anti-aircraft system. The systems are usually transported by a 5-tonne 6×6 truck.

A true classic gun. Used by Argentina during the Falklands War. The British were impresed and used the captured guns to defend their bases in continental Europe. It is now used by the Chilean Airforce. I got to see it in a FIDAE airshow. A great improvement over the old 20mm optically aimed guns.

I think the latest incarnation is SkyNEX with a single barrel capable of 1100 RPM and specialized radar that can attack swarming drones.

I like the AA autocannons in general, they are often underappreciated. Pieces like this double barreled 35 mm and Bofors 40 mm decimate infantry and all AFVs short of MBTs.
