It's a day early for me, but it's 2024 somewhere! I have a LOT of giveaways, tutorials, and reviews in the works this year. This will be a huge year.

There's definitely a need for more quality content and I'm very happy to hear that we'll keep getting that from you in 2024. My favourite cubes this year were the RS3M V5 ballcore (but with springs) and the WRM V9 Special Edition (with springs instead of maglev). Happy New Year Shawn and I would never skip one of your rants.

I've been in the hobby since 2008, and I've definitely noticed the content around cubing has gotten more "sensationalized" as time goes on. Everything is "This is the best puzzle ever?!?!?" or "This is so awful I can't BELIEVE they released it!". I genuinely look forward to seeing some maturity added to the content pool.

I learned how to solve 3x3 through a video from LanceTheBlueKnight. It's insane to see the change in everything since then

Finally someone who just had to say it!! Personally I have been cubing since around 2008. At that time, I remember being exposed to so many cubing videos that were beneficial to me due to how informative it was. Unboxings, Reviews, Tutorials, and Walkthroughs. That was the norm for cubing content but those 4 concepts helped me and many others become better in the speedcubing venture. There were many channels that made it happen. MeMyself&Pi, Thrawst, BadMePhisto, CrazyBadCuber, RedKb, Cyoubx, etc. Those were the first YouCubers. This inspired the 2nd generation of incredible channels like TCKyewbs, BrodyTheCuber, JRCuber, Cubeologist, Convinsa, TehCubeDude, etc. If there was a specific cubing concept that you wanted to learn more about, there was someone to make it happen one way or another. I remember there was even a cubing channel where it composed of nothing but the best cubers in the world who would make tutorial videos like that (Cubing World). Then came along what I consider that last generation of true YouCubers like JPerm, Cubeorithms, CubeSolveHero, InsaneCuber, SpeedCubeReview, (you) etc. Around that time, some channels started to make skits and shorts for entertainment purposes. It was speedcubing themed, but not genuinely speedcubing related. Now there are just many "cubing" channels like Z3 Cubing and SoupTimmy that are nothing but random videos that's not informative at all. It relates to speedcubing but there's nothing about channels like those that will actually help me or others improve as speedcuber. Now as a middle school math teacher myself with my own Rubik's Cube Club, it's been hard for me to recommend a lot of cubing channels for new members to subscribe to that will help them get faster. I don't think speedcubing itself is dying. I really think that in itself is getting a lot more attention than ever before but the proper resources to make someone actually getting better is at an all time low. A lot of my students don't know what a CamCuber Zhanchi is, or the origin of the force cube or why it was necessary for force cubes to be created, or the milestones of cubing hardware like torpedoes, or who Lubix were, or what year stickerless cubes became WCA legal and why there were illegal before, or who Feliks Zemdegs is, or who was responsible for the modern norm of cubes being magnetized, etc. It's sad to see the current knowledge that cubers today have. "Non magnetized cubes suck, Gan is the only good brand out there, the only channels I know are JPerm and SoupTimmy." Such misconceptions and lack of knowledge will not pave the way for future proper speedcubers. I'm thankful that you have stayed true and consistent with your content but its very scary and in all honesty, disgraceful to see how upside down speedcubing content has become.

I always come back to watch your videos because they're grounded, and i like the way you talk. You sound more professional and have a good vocabulary.
You're not trying to be a "certified in your face biased entertainer and jokester" and i like that about this channel. Thanks for the quality content! Keep it up!!!

I agree Gunhong Pro is the best. I used to main Tornado v3 and thought it would never be beaten, but Gunhong Pro is just so good.

I just got the GuHong Pro for my son for less than $12 and picked up the RS3M v5 for myself for $19...seems like solid choices for just starting out. Hopefully we like and enjoy them.

I like and appreciate the way you do your video's👍

You forgot to put a time stamp for the super weilong! Love your objective approach to reviewing cubes. I’ll have to get the guhong pro now as well cus i’ve heard so much good stuff about it, i’ve been recommending the tornado as a all round best cube, but i might just have to start recommending the guhong, tho i did hear a few people complaining about the different core settings barely feeling different from each other. I also think including some older cubes would be nice, ik it’s a 2023 cube review but a honorable mention for some older cubes like the gts3m, valk, tengyun and gan sm would be nice, i think performance wise they’re still on par with modern flagships, and if anything they’re more unique than todays flagships. Happy new years!

👏👏👏 agree with overall content quality and thank you for addressing. As someone slightly older myself, I don't sub to the 'doing it for likes' channels but there has been a noticeable drop in quality channels' numbers (which is fine, you can't force someone to create content) but thus a void appears and I'm glad you want to keep standards up and not drift away. Hopefully this will invigorate others 👍
Btw, props on all in your personal life, sounds like you've been grafting, well deserved!

I bought a GoHung pro 54mm for OH and absolutely love it. Considering the 56 for my standard 3x3 main. Honestly an amazing cube.

10 years ago all puzzles were glossy plastic. Then, for no reason started to make mat plastic ones, although most people prefered glossy. Now UV coding feels the same as glossy plastic but it's a "feature", so they can charge you $5-$10 more dollars.
What I'm trying to say is that many "features" are illusions, you don't need UV coding, you don't need adjustable magnets if the ones installed have the right force, you don't even need spring compresion, just a screw. Once the cube is set up you no longer need those things, and I'm sure most people use the same settings more or less, so a well balanced cube from the fatory would be enough. Companies are charching double the price the cube is worth for you to set up the puzzle. Most of the times most of the settings are unuseble, so they didn't even test them, they offer 900 different settings and call it a day.
That's why Iove puzzles like the guhong pro, it come with no tools, only tension adjustment and you can do it by hand (although I would rather have a screw). No fancy box, no unnecessary stuff, just a great cube.

I've been in and out of cubing since about 2016 and I can see the devolution of content like you talk about and I really only watch videos from the cubicle or scs if I want to stay on top of new releases. I'm not sure if I just grew up, but I feel like a lot of this is attributed to the fact that good cubers are getting younger, as compared to before, so channels are resorting to clickbait garbage to catch their attention. I do like the more organic content from channels like yours or from smaller channels that competitive cubers actually run. It's tragic, but I don't think it'll last forever.

Thanks for the video, as always very thoughtful and mature thinking about the community, with a usefull content <3

I hope that 2024 will be the year for new companies to emerge or to create actual good puzzles (like MS cubes or MoreTry), and of course more 4x4 and weirdly designed/shaped ones !

In regards to your rant, i like the sound of it, like redoing old videos, some people don't get it because sometimes the old videos explain it way better, but when I am looking for videos, I'm probably not going to click on the 8 year old video, i might find that video later, but the first one I'll look at is the one with the newest information, even if all the information is old, its good to revamp and reupload things that are relevant

Thanks for the video! I hope you have a Happy New Year! When the Guhongs were announced I pre-ordered the 55mm version with springs thinking it would be better than the maglev version. It isn’t! I did pre-order the Gan 14 UV with the cosmic set- up, that was a $90 mistake, and I much prefer the Gan 12 or Weilong v9 over the 14. My favorite cube this year was the Gan 12 ui.
I spent way too much money on cubes this year. I hope there aren’t so many new cube releases next year.

Great video, very nicely done. Everything that is important was covered in this video. Maybe the rant could have been other video but i understand it. I would recommend the V9 weilong as it is really an insane cube, it is my main and i switched to it from the gts2m. Gan 13 is also great. Happy new year
