Arc Billet Connecting Rod Installation and Torque Specs

preview_player
Показать описание
Shows how to install an arc rod in a small engine, which can be a predator 212cc, briggs 5 hp flathead, or any engine that has an arc billet aluminum connecting rod built for it. A billet rod will allow your engine to rev safely above the goverend RPM range without causing the rod to fail. A connecting rod is only one part of the puzzle, and should be used in conjunciton with other performance parts for maximum performance and safety.

Those Arc rods look great. Dream item for me. I usually polish the original rod so it holds together better. That Arc rod would look great polished and hold together better too.

I had an old russian made two cylinder engine and what I did with inlet and exaust ports was that I took some material out and made it like a golfball surface... It does help a lot and polishing isnt going to do any good. polishing after golf ball surface finish? Perhaps... It was a flatheat straight 2.

also I found that the more the valves open the more power you get to a sudden point where they hit the top... It lowers the compression if you grind hollows to top of the valves but still the gains are huge..I just welded some extra on camshaft to increase travel of the valves... I doubled the rpm of that engine with just car carb from toyota starlet. Engines sure are fun till they blow into pieces..

Btw. Follow up to your process of torquing the bolts: you should never ever hold the crankstaft by just putting the smallend of the rod in a vise. Put the crank into the vise instead.

Would I have to replace rod if I removed governor... I know I would replace flywheel but I don't have the knowledge to go in the case of the motor that far and do it properly

good video, but i think theres some stuff left out. You could go into much greater detail especially for those who are new to small engines or engines in general.

What does it mean when the oil rings wont synchronized with the block while using a piston ring compressor they just seem too lose going into the block hitting edges?

I don't know but, apparently I had two connecting rod bolts that failed. both snapped at 160 in lbs. Everything went well seating the bearings both bolts torqued at 170 in lbs. When I removed the bolts after that to install the plasti gauge and start the torquing process again, when I reached 160in lbs that's when the first bolt snapped. Then went to the other bolt and that one snapped. What are your thoughts on that??

You didn't show your measurements or anything?

What is the best way to advance the timing in a small engine? Should I do it by adjusting the cam shaft forward a few teeth, or should I cut a new key way into the flywheel? This is for an overhead valve engine.

Sears had the single 1/4" 12 pt socket 1/4" drive to use with 1/4" in-lb torque wrench

Can this 5hp flathead billet rod be put on a 1998 3.5hp flathead?

Since the Clones or Clonda's came out I've stacked these old Flathead Briggs up like stove wood. Folks will bring me the same old Briggs several times a season and I'll talk them into spending $100 and and have total dependability. Since I have these old Flatheads and seeing the Clonda carburetor videos has gotten me to thinking about building a performance Flathead. Will these older engines run with the Honda class engines? I only use them for homestead chores. Will this engine with the billet rod, porting a d Clonda carburetor out perform a mild Honda? I guess with the mods you've done to this engine with just a billet rod in a Clone and the rest stock would this Briggs out run the Clonda as described? With a free platform to start with in these Briggs that I've collected and a billet rod and maybe a performance piston plus all the labor of love in making intake and the other lite machining I could have a project or should I spend on a new Clone and add to it?

So you can not properly size a con rod to crankshaft tolerance with a caliper. When .001" can mean the difference between go/no go you have to use a micrometer. If you do not have access to a dial bore gauge and micrometer, which most DIY people wont, you need plastigauge like you showed. Thanks for the vid

Hi when using a digital caliper and measuring the outside of the journal to the inside of the bearing what number do I have to be between when using a stock crankshaft on a predator 212 what oil clearance is in the safe Zone after I deduct the numbers?

sooo.. I'm confused. upon tear down of my bone stock brand new 212 to evaluate what mods I want to make, I notices no bearing between rod, end cap and crank journal. this concerns me.. under light low and low rpm I don't see this being an issue, but being I want high somewhat reliable revs I see the rod/bearing... or where the bearing would be as the weak point. (experianced with engines but first time going internal on thos one)

What can be done if you don't have the right measurement from the bearing and the rod?
