Yamaha VSTAR 650 Rear Gear Oil - Check , Inspect and Change

In this video I will conduct what is a standard rear gear oil change procedure on a Star 650 after checking the level and inspecting the old oil. These changes are part of the maintenance schedule just like the motor oil. Its important to check the level before draining to help determine a leak.

A 17mm wrench is the only size needed for the task. The bike should be upright for checking requiring a stand, or two people. I have found that my level wasn't low, so I could proceed, if it was, I would check all seals and drain plugs for leaks.

Draining the oil, I take my time for it to sufficiently drain as the bolts are cleaned up, the 650 unlike the 1100, has no magnetic bolt on the bottom of this bike. If the crush washer is leaking, it should be replaced. 17ft/lbs or 205in/lbs is set for my torque wrench.

A look at the oil shows no worrying debris, so now the plug can be reinstalled and torqued down. To make filling easier, just under .2 litres was measured and added to the unit. Final top off was done by eye to the bottom of the screw threads. This is done as measured with the bike leveled, two people maybe necessary. The top bolt is then torqued down, completing the procedure.

Absolute gigachad for making these videos. I just pulled my '07 650 Silverado out of storage and I'm doing everything on it that's within my capability. The only problem it's had since I bought it is that while cold and still on choke, if I put it in gear the idle soars. High enough to idle forward at 5-10mph in first. Ever seen that before? Can't find anything online about it.

Your valve adjustment video in particular saved me a pretty penny.

Mr. Rubin. I bought a 2000 V-Star 650 that had been in a garage for 10 years. It would no longer run due to carb goo from ethanol-flavored gasoline and neglect. In addition, it was very dusty and covered in cobwebs. I've never done motorcycle maintenance before, and haven't owned a bike in 30 years. Thanks to your excellent videos, I have it running and I'm working my way around it doing "all the things". Tonight I'll be replacing the front brake fluid and this weekend I plan to do the final drive gear oil.

What makes your videos so good? You call things by their correct name, you say what tools you're using, you edit the videos down to just what's necessary and you provide options for alternate situations/choices when appropriate. Keep up the good work and thanks for your service to our country!

I enjoy all these videos, have watched this particular one before, and just watched again before going out to change my gear oil.
I didn't notice the mess on the saddle bag before when I watched it, lmao !!!
Oil is good for leather though. Correct ?
Or is that bag leather ? Could have done a short follow up on accessory care after that mess, lmao !!!
Just goes to show that we all make mistakes, especially while doing tedious work like this because we didn't have a measured cup of some sort. Plus, now the bag has a distressed look and it was free of charge !!!

Do you recommend having the oil warm when changing? I'm getting ready to do maintenance on the bike. Oil change, and figured shaft oil would be a good idea.

I just bought a used 2006 vstar classic, the rear gear oil is leaking everywhere. It looks like the previous owner JBwelded a crack. How should I go about this?

Is that considered brake oil for the rear brakes? I was told to use dot 4 but yours says a lubricant.

I have a problem that my bike does not work, no lights, no horn, no power, no self motor, and I checked the main fuse and the rest of the fuse and battery and I don't know where the problem is now.
