I thought he was referring to the Trunks that defeated the Androids in his timeline. I always wondered why they built a time machine and thought to go back in time? Where would they get the idea to do that?

Actually, Bulma did say that "Trunks" is an uncommon name after Goku "guessed" that was the name of her child. Funny, because the other day I was thinking about someone else out there being named Trunks, and it turns out that it's kinda official. However, it is kinda fun(ny) to think about the Trunks that we do know, traveling back in time and falling in love with someone from the past. Maybe there are more timelines than we know? Is there some kind of butterfly effect from Trunks doing this? Maybe Goku wouldn't be the main character if it wasn't for this?
