What happens when historical costuming meets high-visibility safety gear? You get the Safety Wizard, or High Visard—a medieval-inspired outfit that’s impossible to ignore. In this April Fools' project, I take neon stash fabrics and use real historical patterns (a 14th-century kirtle and a London hood) to create a costume that’s both ridiculous and entirely legit. While the colors might scream "construction site," the sewing techniques are the real deal. Join me for a high-visibility deep dive into medieval fashion—because why be mysterious when you can glow like a beacon? #HistoricalCostuming #AprilFools

Bright colors? Check. Historical patterns? Check. A completely ridiculous yet fully functional costume? Absolutely. Welcome to my latest project, where I take neon stash fabrics and transform them into the ultimate Safety Wizard—or should I say, High Visard? This April Fools' Day, I’m bringing some high-visibility magic to historical costuming by using authentic medieval patterns and real sewing techniques to create the most eye-searingly bright 14th-century kirtle and London hood you’ve ever seen. Because who says wizards have to be mysterious when they could instead be impossible to ignore?

While this costume may be a joke, the construction is entirely serious. I’ll be assembling a 14th-century kirtle from my own pattern, drafting and constructing a lined robe, and pairing it with a London hood for that extra layer of high-vis wizardry. Expect the usual chaos of stash-busting fabric decisions, problem-solving to make these luminous materials work for medieval silhouettes, and a fair amount of me questioning my life choices. If you’ve ever wondered what medieval clothing would look like if medieval tailors had access to traffic cone orange and construction site yellow, well—you’re about to find out.

Along the way, I’ll talk about the uses of these patterns, how they would have been constructed, and how I adapt them for modern materials. Whether you're here for the sewing, the costuming knowledge, or just to witness the sheer audacity of this project, I hope you enjoy this high-visibility adventure. Let me know in the comments—should Safety Wizard become an actual LARP character? Or is this the first and last time we acknowledge the existence of high-vis medieval fashion?

"High Vizard" sounds like a cross between a high vizier and a wizard, which i think is basically just a description of jafar from aladdin.

It's no coincidence that OSHA safety manuals look and read quite a bit like the sort of magical tomes that would be written by deeply academic and rules-nerdy Hi Vizards.

I think you just won the award for "funniest outfit to wear while LARPing as a stealth character"
Also, this is clearly a nighttime outfit, lest you accidentally blind someone. I do love it though

In the dark of night, you might be able to find a coven of high vizards around a fire (a small one with a safety railing around it), chanting "OSHA, OSHA, OSHA"

Great. Now I have to make this for dark walks in winter. You've just inadvertently created a new Scottish cryptid, I hope you're happy.

"but then I realized that would make me look like a traffic cone"
My first thought was "isn't that kind of the point?", but then I thought of something better. If not wearing one, a high vizard would definitely have a *traffic cone familiar* or a dozen. Whether such a familiar is a magically animate object skittering around on legs it can tuck under itself or a large magical hermit crab that lives in a mundane traffic cone is left up to the individual practitioner of the roadside reflective arts.

As a irl safety wizard (well ok ocupational and industrial safety engineer) the idea speaks to me. The endlook made me feel a little scared, probably the mask but it is also a lot of fun. Possibly people would heed the advice better if it came from a safety wizard in full regalia!

Every mage with a tower trembles in fear when the safety wizard shows up for an inspection

I was actually waiting for a traffic cone wizard hat...

A friend of mine played a dnd character who was the embodiment of lawful good, who canonically wore a high-vis vest and respected all caution signs and police tape. I think this is the character's final form.

The combo of black gloves and high-vis tape at the wrists makes your hands basically vanish in the night shots. Safety Wizard may be safe, but they are also a little ominous... :)

Which, now that I think about it, goes weirdly well with "everybody look at your hands".

Ngl, I am using everything I see here to make a high vis dino costume for my little black dog. I'm terrified to walk her at night. My night vision sucks and she disappears at night, so I'm gonna make her a little dino outfit to wear for night walks so I (and cars) can see her. She can be my little safety dino.

I've gotta say that as you were wearing it, all I could think was some sort of Medieval Plague Doctor meets Modern Quarantine. It's a bizarre idea and completely fun at the same time.

imagine a safety wizard casting "OSHA RESTRICT" on you and now you cant physically even begin to do anything that would be an osha violation or lead directly to one

Ah yes! So glad you mentioned Tactical Breach Wizards, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thumbnail for this video.

OSHA never even saw this coming. Hope they can handle my new uniform.

This is in the same vein of the guy who got a hi-vis kilt and vest 😂

Did I skip to the end for the reveal? Yes. Have I made myself the traffic cone equivalent? Yes. Being visible is really important. Tasteful dark coats are rubbish; what funeral am I going to? My own? NO. I love this. thank you!

This may just be an Australian thing, but the fact that we call those orange traffic cones "witches hats" would absolutely have contributed to the need for this to exist :D
