In 2021, the Government of Japan contributed US$ 1.9 million to the ILO’s dual response to flooding and the COVID-19 pandemic in Mayo suburb of Khartoum, Sudan. The ILO completed the employment-intensive investment project in support of the rehabilitation of damaged water reservoir facilities and roads with functional drainage systems, improving access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure. Through the construction work, the ILO contributed to the enhanced awareness of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) principles, as well as to the transfer of Integrated Rural Accessibility Planning (IRAP) tool for evidence-based infrastructure investment planning.
