Devin has synesthesia, meaning that he sees sound visually in shapes and colours and stuff. He creates some amazing soundscapes!

Devin Townsend: a vocal savant with incredible guitar skills and the backbone of a stand-up comedian.

the "heavyness"of metal is not always aggression, some times it can be power, triumphant, Joyful, projection, size, its a dynamics thing. I suggest listening to some instrumental metal, because its so close to classical once you get used to the tonality of the instruments. The heavy vocals usually are designed to blend with the guitars texture wise, whether they hold note or not. Someone like Dev can sing sweet as an angel, then scream like a banshee, but hold note, but also if he wishes guttural growl or straight up white noise scream, truly amazing voice. Very talented composer/writer too

Deadhead Live at Royal Albert Hall is just outrageous. He pitch bends screams live. And really hard.

I love seeing everyone's utter shock and wonder as he belts out that first line

He was joking about the solo - but believe me, his guitar chops are incredible. Seen him live, play for 22 years myself. Devin is a special kind of musician. Love him!
And check out a guitar video of him - there are a few where he plays Van Halen style Leads while holding a conversation...

You should 100% give Devin's song "Why?" a listen. He played it on a live stream for charity not long ago. He's beyond amazing.

Devin Townsend is one of my favorite humans on this planet. And Ken, you are right... a lot of the strain and tension he displays is for show... but is way easier for him than he's making it look. And although everyone is recommending Deadhead at RAH next, I actually love his Plovdiv show where he has a full orchestra backing them.

Now you NEED to do Deadhead at Royal Albert Hall by Devin. Required listening.

He’s such a performer and doesn’t take himself seriously, character! Great range and variety of style in his vocals. Great reaction

Yeah, dude was like, 19 I think when he was kind of discovered by and recruited to do vocals for Steve Vai's work. Talk about being tossed in the deep end, he's a kid singing with literally one of the greatest guitarists ever known. At that point either you have the goods or you would just fade away into obscurity, unless you're something real special you'll just get put on the back burner...

All comes back around, Vai had the same thing happen playing with Zappa at like, 19 or 20, you don't play with people like that if you're a slouch
