Back then g shocks were popular with teens. Especially during the swag era. Wearing one made you felt like you got a hublot made for 5 year olds. With how accessible they were it helped a lot of kids style wise or a nice way to dive into the watch world.

I've got the G-Sock DW-9052 and I absolutely love it. Battery lasts 5-6 years, losing a minute over a year. No scratches, despite over 7 years of absolute abuse and adverse conditions. I've worn it in salt and fresh mud as well as water with zero problems. The PVC band has not stretched a single millimeter and has never had to be repaired/replaced. It's a great watch and it's worth every penny you pay for it.

G shocks aren’t nerdy watches… ok wel maybe the huge bulky ones lol. But the classic square face and the casioak are fantastic watches. The frogman is another good one. Military specialists use G Shock more than luminox, marathon, etc.

I love them! I used to work on a drilling rig and I had the same one for years covered in mud and diesel everyday and it never quit on me. Still works to this day

I bought one 11 years ago. The wristband finally fell apart. I put a cloth one on it and it's still going strong. It's solar powered so no need for batteries. As a fisherman it gets wet a lot. For 89 bucks I hit the jackpot.
