In March 2021, the Suez Canal, one of the world's most important trading routes, was blocked for six days after the accidental grounding of Ever Given, a Golden-class container ship. The 400-metre-long (1,300 ft) vessel had been buffeted on 23 March by strong winds, knocking it off course according to the company Egyptian authorities subsequently stated this may not have been the only reason for the grounding, and that "there may have been technical or human errors" as well. The ship ran aground on one of the canal's banks, obstructing the canal and preventing other vessels from passing through. The obstruction was south of the section of the canal that has two channels, so there was no way for other ships to bypass Ever Given.

The obstruction had a significant impact on other shipping, with at least 369 ships queueing to pass through the canal on 28 March. On 29 March, the vessel was partially re-floated and "reorientated 80 percent in the right direction" although the "bow remained stuck". The ship was finally freed that afternoon, at 15:05 local time (13:05 UTC), and started moving, under tow, towards the Great Bitter Lake, for technical inspection. The canal was checked for damage before it could be reopened. The Suez Canal Authority informed shipping agencies that shipping could resume from 19:00 local time (17:00 UTC).

Ever Given suddenly made billions of people around the world to know what are vessels and what is Suez Canal.

Useful. People often don't realise that these very large vessels are actually rather underpowered in relation to their size. I remember my late father who was one of the engineers on a VLCC in the 1970's went on a course at Warsash near Southampton were " Mini Super-Tankers" used to demonstrate this. From memory they were about 12m in length but only had one eighth of a horsepower motors propelling them. As that was the about the power to weight/size ratio
They were used to train the crews of very large vessels to control them.
Particularly in confined waters or when coming to a dead stop.
This coupled with the confined space in the canal gives the crew very little time to react.
Also the hight of the vessel provides considerable windage. Allowing a sudden strong gust of wind to drive the ship aground.

The Ever Gentle, the twin sister of the Ever Given, was damaged by a crane at Taipei harbor, Taiwan. Another strange coincidence. Evergreen is really unlucky.

You would think that at this point in your trip you would pay attention.

The wind was probably the greatest factor. There needs to be international cooperation to widen the canal because it is only a matter of time that another similar situation happens. For an example what happens if you ever have a ship fire. It would not matter what the size of the ship is the Suez Canal could easily get bottle necked up again and you would have hundreds of ships backed up again.

The lack of winds and dust storm and any illustration of bottom contact makes this video somewhat, well...it's otherwise a nice job. It's nice though to have a general background explanation for anyone looking for a quick overview who didn't hear about this

Why is the media constantly trying to explain to you what you should think about the news??...

I expected the ship to drop its wheels and start driving to its destination. I guess the captain did too

The dual section of the canal needs to extended to the full length of the canal so that there is always a way to get around a problem. Considering how important this is to world trade, the international community should help Egypt with the resources to make it happen.
