The first time I heard the concept of "shrinkflation" was in an article written by Harvard professor of paleontology Stephen Jay Gould, first published in Charles Rubin's 1980 book "Junk Food".

The article was titled "Phyletic size decrease in Hershey bars", and charted the way Hershey bars changed prices and sizes from 1949 through 1979. The author applied the methods of evolutionary biology to analyze the trends in consumer goods pricing.
