Connections Between Practices in NGSS and Common Core Math and ELA

This is the third in a series of seven web seminars that explore the Next Generation Science Standards. Presenter Sarah Michaels, of Clark University, connects the science and engineering practices described in A Framework for K–12 Science Education with the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts, describing the common elements. She identifies productive student discussion as the central activity essential to all three sets of standards. Dr. Michaels shares videos demonstrating the key elements of teacher-guided, productive talk. She then provides strategies and resources to help build teachers’ capacity for guiding discussion in the classroom.
