A 12-hour rescue operation paralyzed an escalator at Chiayi’s High Speed Rail station on Tuesday. The trapped victim was a stray kitten that had somehow made its way inside the escalator. After the cat was discovered in the early hours of the morning, station staff tried to lure it out with food. When that proved ineffective, station staff decided to bring out the big guns and get the escalator dismantled. Let’s hear from the station.

During a station patrol in the early hours of the morning, we discovered a kitten had been trapped inside. We contacted the Livestock Disease Control Center of Chiayi County and the escalator manufacturer for help.

We found that the kitten was trapped inside the escalator, and kept moving around everywhere inside. To rescue it, the High Speed Rail decided to shut down the escalator and dismantle it, removing each 40kg step one by one.

We are extremely touched that the Taiwan High Speed Rail went to such lengths to save the kitten’s life. We would like to thank the HSR and all the workers for their hard work.

The escalator was taken apart piece by piece, including the side panels and even the steps, which weigh 40kg each. The station reports that another three kittens had been found on the premises that day, without their mother, and it is thought that the one in the escalator is their sibling. In the end, the kitten made its way out of the escalator on its own, bringing the story to a happy conclusion.
