Autism is condition characterised by challenges of social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviours. A recent study by a university in the UK found children of Somali descent are six times more likely to be referred for the autism spectrum compared to their white or mixed-race peers. In Somali culture, parents feel there are many stigmas surrounding children with autism. The BBC’s Ash Mohamed spoke to activists in both Somalia and the UK on how they have overcome these challenges.

The development of autism is strongly linked to the mother’s immunity. These women are veiled from head to toe in countries where there is barely any sunlight compared to Somalia in addition to probably being indoors most of the time. Their Vitamin D levels are probably incredibly low. Vitamin D is very important to immunity. We are seeing the same issue in Minnesota which has a large Somali community.
