Google WiFi - Get More Ethernet Ports with a Netgear Unmanaged Network Switch

The Google Wifi is a great wifi mesh system, but if you need ethernet ports to hardwire your devices, you're limited to only 1 port. In this video I show how you can easily add ethernet ports with a NETGEAR 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS308)

This was so helpful!! Thanks for posting! We just got the Google Nest Wifi router and I had to figure out the best way to get back out hardwired connections. I had looked at ethernet switches but didn't know what exactly I was looking at or which way to have it hooked up once I got one.

You can also just turn your old WiFi router with built in gigabit switchport into unmanaged switch, you just have to make sure you disable in old router settings WiFi, dhcp, routing and assign it unmanaged static IP address from google WiFi. I have my own google WiFi connected to Linksys e3200 running on Advanced Tomato firmware.

Great video. This helps me immensely. I'm about to do the same exact setup but with an 8 port switch likely.

Thank you! I have been struggling to speed up the wifi to the far end of the house. You told me I could have multiple ethernet cables going from the switch to Google wifi routers. I did it for three and it workr just fine. Now everthing just screams! Note I took the line from the fiberjack to the first Google router and the return line from it back to the switch. The other two routers got direct lines from the switch.

What if I don't want to use the Google WiFi router?

I'm not sure if you have answered this in a previous comment, but is it possible to just connect the main Puck to the gigabit switch? If that is the case, would it affect the overall performance of wifi?
I just got a 5-port switch (even though I asked for a network box from Google fiber) and was wondering on how to hardline it so that I can get the gig speed for my pc as well for the security system my father installed around the house.

Can i plug my mesh units in to the switch? Modem/main mesh unit (router)/ switch / then in switch plug another 3 separate mesh units?? Will all 4 mesh units work as mesh network of 3 are plugged in to the switch and not connected to each other using the lan port at back of mesh unit? Thanks

Great video! I think Mac Mini 2018 already has 802.11ac wireless which you should be able to get full speed of what you pay for. Why do you, wirelessly, only get half (~450Mbps) of the wired speed (~930Mbps)?

Thanks for the recommendation. Have you attempted to connect one of the access points via the ethernet switch (wired)? I have done this and am having trouble getting a speed comparable to the main puck. Thanks

You used a regular ethernet cable? Not a crossover cable? Thanks for the vid.

I have wifi on my internet modem which is connected to the other wifi router with wired connection on the other side of the apartment. So the coverage is fine, but I have two independent wifi networks and that's why I am considering Google WiFi Mesh.

Question that I have is: As I also have devices that I prefer to be connected by wire connections on both sides, if I connect two switches, on two Google WiFi nodes, are they gonna be all visible as on the same network? Like, you can access shared folders from computers on TV/PS4...
