“Putin is not about to roll across Ukraine. He’s having enough trouble just simply taking the eastern Donbas region.”

The end of the war in Ukraine will not come from the total victory of either side, but through negotiation and diplomacy, the "unsatisfactory gap" between the two extremes, says Russia expert Mark Galeotti.

I'd say things can go badly enough in Moscow, not on the battlefield, that the russians DO actually have to leave Ukraine. And that's the way it's currently trending. The vertical of power is strong, but brittle. NATO has the ability outlast putin, it will just come down to the will to do so.

The most likely end to this is that Putin falls out of a window, the new government retreats from Ukraine and blames Putin for the defeat.

What are Russians even fighting for? Do they even remember?

"Between the two extremes"? Jeeeesh ...the only extreme is the Russian extreme. Ukraine is simply defending themselves. Let's stop the BS.

A journalist asked a Russian man what he thought of the Russian government. The man said, "I can't complain."

If EU let Ukraine fall my friends the price will be enormous in the future.

Each month recently, I see Ukraine develop new techniques, and the latest round of attacks on Russian ammunition depots is another example of Ukraine saying we need to keep going no matter what our allies do. They are slowly making progress in so many ways. Having said that they really do need the help and and support of their allies, but at least they are not sitting navel staring, and waiting for the Russians to roll them over.

Major respect for Zelenskyy. Not fussed with wearing fancy suits or pompous military uniforms with dozens of medals. Makes other world leaders look like the pretentious fools that they are. Legend.

I don't think losing this war is an option, it's not the Russian People, it's the Russian Regime.

One key goal of any acceptable solution has to be that Russia is deterred from trying again in the near future. One sure way would be for Ukraine to join NATO and for Western troops to be stationed in Ukraine. How to get there is the question. Russia giving up and withdrawing from all of Ukraine would be one way.

Short of that, I don’t think NATO would want to station troops in Ukraine without some sort of deal between Ukraine and Russia.

Russia will win if the West stops supporting Ukraine. And Ukraine can win if the West continues its support, and it will win sooner if they increase their support. Russia was forced to withdraw from Afghanistan after significantly less losses, they knew they could not win. It’s almost as if we want there to be a frozen war with one fifth of Ukraine occupied by Russia. And a comprehensive win for Ukraine comes with a Brucie bonus. Refugees will be able to return to their homes, and no longer have to seek refuge in Europe.

Excellent, effortlessly-fluent commentary from Mark Galeotti again.

It in inevitable that Puitn will lose this war. Many commentators don't understand why. It's a simple numbers game - resources. Putin's economy was half that of the UK when he started this war - it's even worse now - he is going to run out of money to buy weapons and pay for his army. It' doesn't take a monetary economist to realise that it's not a good thing when your economy is based upon energy exports and your largest customer walks away. It's not a good thing when your central bank raises interest rates to 19%, 4 times that of the UK. We are witnessing the fall of a dictator - it really is that simple.

I believe Ukraine can attain a victory that includes regaining all their land, but it means a commitment by us in the West to maintain the support indefinitely and to resist the urge to accept a conditional ceasefire. Putin has to know that he cannot wait the West out and there is not breathing room to rebuild.

His economy is failing, and time is not on his side. That's how the victory that requires him to pull his military out entirely will come.

What about Russia being defeated economically? I don't think anyone is expecting Ukraine to win on the decisively on the battlefield, but instead for it too big of a burden for russia and the russian people to sustain.
