Explaining Every Pokemon in Competitive Gen 2 [PART ONE]

In this video, I discuss how every Generation 1 Pokemon performs in the various tiers of competitive Generation 2 (GSC).

———————

On GSC UUBL:
GSC UUBL contains so many Pokemon because it is a product of tiering attitudes from the early days of Smogon. Back then, UUBL was seen more as the middle tier, not really the banlist. OU was the standard Pokemon, the big standard metagame guys. UU was the Pokemon that were not good in standard play, the suckers and losers of the world. UUBL was the middle ground between these two tiers. These Pokemon weren’t staples in OU, but they could be good if used correctly. This is why UUBL is so big in GSC and especially ADV, a lot of Pokemon were seen as mediocre but not useless. UUBL as we know it in modern gens, which is the list of Pokemon banned from UU, only came around in generation four. Other BL tiers in GSC, like NUBL and PUBL, work like the modern BL tiers.

Tiers:
Ubers - The highest tier. Ubers contains the only Pokemon disallowed from OU, the standard GSC tier.
OU (OverUsed) - The Standard GSC format. OU is by far the most played and represented GSC tier.
UUBL (UnderUsed Banlist) - See the Above paragraph
UU (UnderUsed) - Pokemon that were considered poor in OU in the early 2000s.
NUBL (NeverUsed BanList) - Pokemon that were banned from NU.
NU (NeverUsed) - Did not exist when GSC was current gen and was created well after it ceased to be CG.
PUBL (PU BanList) - Pokemon that were banned from PU.
PU - Did not exist when GSC was current gen and was created well after it ceased to be CG.
ZUBL (ZeroUsed BanList) - Pokemon that were banned from ZU.
ZU (ZeroUsed) - Lowest played tier. Did not exist when GSC was current gen and was created well after it ceased to be CG.
SZU (SubZeroUsed) - Fully Evolved Pokemon considered not good enough for ZU.

COMPETITIVE POKEMON JARGON:

STAB (SameTypeAttackBonus) is a boost in damage to attacking moves if they are of the same type as the Pokemon using them; an example would be a Charizard using Flamethower / Wing Attack.

Phazing (PsuedoHazing) is when you force an opposing Pokemon out. Roar and Whirlwind are immediate phazing moves, while Perish Song can act as a pseudo phazing move.

I love that Venomoth is the Pokemon with the most random viability, being top tier in Gen 1 NU and Gen 3 PU, and being banned from Gen 5-7 RU while being viable in Gen 7 UU as well, sadly, Gen 9 power creep did knock it down to ZU, and I don't know how it is down there.

One of the worst decisions of all time was to not continue to let the Golem line have rapid spin. WHYY?

You could have given me a whole year and I wouldn't have ever guessed that Primeape's best set was Rest, Sleep Talk, Cross Chop, and Thunder.
