I don't sing, but I do play cornet and that is the best explanation of the breath support mechanism I've heard. I too wonder why this is not taught more widely at junior level. Your point about over-breathing resonated with me, as I often make the mistake of taking in too much air for the length of phrase to be played, and ending up with a lot of stuck, stale air that cannot be gotten rid of. This creates tension in the body and a closing of the throat, which are nothing but bad news for a brass player.

I’m excited to be doing this. I’ve always loved to sing but people often tell me to ‘belt it out’, or say, ‘it’s good but I can’t hear you. Finally I’m going to get some structured techniques to strengthen my voice and sing better and longer. I’m 76 and not done yet.

Yes indeed Victoria is a blessing. The obsession of teachers with the word ‘diaphragm’ and many other constantly used vague terms has caused me endless confusion!!!! Victoria quickly dissolves the confusion time and again, with a simple comprehensible explanation. P.xx

I learned a lot about gently pressing against the ribcage to slow down exhaling while singing to hold a note longer. Thank you.

Thank you so much Victoria, it's very very true that the amount of air shouldn't be a lot to sing a long phrase..my bad experience.
