Hematology: Making a Peripheral Blood Smear

To make a peripheral blood smear I put my spreader slide on its side long ways across the smear slide. The spreader slide is rocked back onto its long edge at a 45 degree angle. It is bright up into the distal part of the blood drop and allowed to spread along the edge to almost the width of the smear slide. The spreader slide is then moved slowly away from me toward the end of the slide distal to the frosted end.

I realize the spreading portion of the procedure was outside of camera view. Please read the description for how I spread the blood. I will also try to do a quick portion of the staining video showing the blood spreading motion.
