Whistles are still a pretty good thing to have when hiking. If lost, you can be heard from pretty far away. I used to make sure my kids had a good whistle whenever we’d go camping or hiking— or if going some place with a big crowd. If lost or if a stranger tried to do something odd, they could do some whistle blasts.

My father in law was a Helms Bakery driver/salesman for 30 years in Venice CA (LA). A few years after he retired he gave his 2 whistles (one to me and one to his son). They are loud enough that customers would hear them come down the street as they drove slowly through the neighborhood. They were never sold to the public as an everyday item. I've never thought to check the web on them but this video had me ready to do it for fun.
