As someone with ADHD, this is definitely solid advice, but in all fairness and kindness, sometimes to KNOW the advice is not enough for us. You’ve basically just told us things we still grapple with but already know 😐

For the impulsivity, I've found just throwing everything into a wish list satisfies the thought. Some people add to cart and leave it there, and I'll do that with things that have a stronger pull but still leave it there for a while.

You can't really do that in a brick and mortar store, though, so I will legitimately just not get a basket. If I'm going in for one or two things, hands only. If it's a couple more, handheld basket. And I always do self-checkout (I genuinely like it better, I'm faster, I'm not trapped in a tight lane, and no interaction required), so going in with a wheeled basket doesn't work.

Buying online and picking up in store or curbside is also a good way, especially for something like a craft store if it's an option. When it's not, I already know I'm going to get more than I plan to in a craft store, but I give myself a limit. Typically I go to the clearance stuff, especially fabrics. If there's not a specific project in mind, and if it's not the current hyperfocus, it doesn't get bought. That's the best way I've found to mitigate on those.

Coffee may one day be my downfall, but it's a cheap stimulant that's easy to get and easy to remember, so I don't stress it too much. It genuinely makes me more functional and lets me be productive, so I'll take that L.

Hi from an ADHD girly who has made herself good with money!
I don't budget. It doesn't work for me, so I just don't.
Every payday, my savings and investments automatically come out of my chequing account. My bills are set to autopay, I do not have to think about them or do anything. The money I have left after all of these things is for groceries and whatever else I need. There's always a bit left over at the end of the pay period because I purposefully leave myself too much just in case and whatever is leftover just goes onto my cc or into savings depending on what the month looks like.

Hope this is helpful for others!

When I go to Target or Ulta, it's always a problem. I throw everything in my basket that looks cute, but get so distracted by everything that I end up staying in the store a long time....long enough to really think about what is in my cart and how much everything is going to cost. So by the end of the trip, I have put 80% of what was in my cart back on the shelf. It happens every time. Honestly, I tend to avoid certain stores all together, because I know it's going to be such a time suck.

Keeping separate accounts helps with my impulsivity and being able to see everything. I have a combined checking/ savings and then another high interest savings account. That account I don’t have a card for and would need to wait a few days to transfer my savings money.

Direct deposit goes into main checking/savings- bills come out of that savings account on auto pay, then I auto transfer for money to go into the high interest savings account then put my fun money in the checking linked to my debit card.

I also started using credit cards for the points and it helps somewhat for variable things like gas and groceries because instead of another bill line item it all gets folded into one bill to pay- the credit card. But I also physically freeze them into a block of ice in the freezer if I feel the tendency to over spend come on.

She makes it sound so easy and not like a clinical condition !
As a person with adhd I go through periods of overspending and the underspending,
Putting money on the side, I have two groups
The larger, low risk Plan that is very sensible and then a much smaller, high risk plan that is fun for me and I get the thrills that come with lucky investing without loosing all my money when I make a bad decision. budgeting needs to be made adhd friendly to be an option that you can recommend earnestly.

„Investigate your priorities“ is almost insultingly simple as an answer for someone with a clinical condition.

To my adhd friends: don’t be a rock, be water. Most things you‘ll try won’t work and that’s okay. We live in a world that’s trying to teach us to be someone else then ourselves.
Get to know yourself and you will recognize when something works and then it’s important to stick with it :)
(Remember, no strategy works 100% of the time, you’re allowed days off just like everyone else ❤️)

I have ADHD with the impulsivity, lack of focus, and hyperactivity... I used to get really stressed out about money until I convinced myself the money I make isn't mine. I only hold on to the money until my bills ask for it. Any extra money I have isn't mine either it goes into savings and investments for future bills. I withhold a bit of my income to spend on things I want. If it's a big purchase I have to wait 3 to 6 months before I buy it, so I know it's not a passing fancy and a random hyperfocus that I'm going to forget about in a couple weeks. Basically if I still want it after 3 to 6 months... It's something I invest my money into...

So basically I'm constantly convinced myself that I'm broke. But I'm used to that, so my money is actually accumulating pretty decently now.

My next thing to grapple is what kind of investment or accounts I'm going to be putting this small horde of wealth into... Mutual funds, index funds, ETF, etc?

That would be a helpful video for me... Do you have any of those videos? Or can recommend a channel with great information about that type of stuff. I'm 20 years late to saving for retirement.

So what is the method to use as an alternative to budgeting?

I budget my more variable expenses (groceries, gas, clothing, wants) using just a certain number allocated to each week. Then when I have a full tank and a full fridge I know I can spend whatever's left on something a little sillier if I want.

Someone please tell me there’s a way to view the entire interview/video? It would be very helpful!
