For most Hungarians, Peter Magyar was an unknown figure in Hungary until a few months ago, when he burst into the public eye. In February, a paedophile pardon scandal rocked Hungarian politics, leading to the resignation of Hungary’s former President, Katalin Novàk and of Magyar’s ex-wife, former Justice Minister Judit Varga. Magyar, who was on the government payroll and part of the inner circle of the ruling party Fidesz, is now running against the government for European elections, and he is drawing massive crowds. DW's Senior International Correspondent Fanny Facsar reports from his latest protest in Debrecen, a Fidesz stronghold.

It's about time DW decided to cover this topic. It's been going on since February.

Poland could do it but in Hungary's case it will be much more difficult to be back on track because all those changes done by Orban are much deeper.

hungarians, please, as not us (russians), don`t give a chance to take your country in someone`s hands (orban`s hands), you don`t need to be friends with our dictator, you need to be free country in europe.

We're fed up with Orban's regime, it's time for a change indeed.
Peter Magyar popped into politics with perfect timing, felt the tension of several fields of Hungarian life, and now after only 1 month of his debute, statistics show his fresh party owns 25% of the votes.
His motto is nolite timere, you shall not fear, ne féljetek!
Cross fingers for us guys!

"Magyar" means "Hungarian", by the way. I´m Czech, have met a lot of Hungarians and they were all great, and most of them didn´t like Orbán. And prime ministers should come and go in democracies. So if Magyar succeeds and moves Hungary from historical grudges and criticizing EU without suggesting solutions to lower inflation, lower prices and technology and things like that, I´ll be more than happy!

Hopefully they do toss Orban to the side before it's too late

Glad to see the international echo of what's going on here and that people are agreeing with us. Many foreign people say Orbán is great, people who 1. don't live here, 2. have no idea how deeply corrupt the system is, 3. people who just agree in 1-2 noisy subjects and don't pay attention to the small details. Árad a Tisza!

I hear a lot of Germans wishing for their country an “Orbán” but before wishing this, they should know more about the real Orbán and his “M. Lőrinc” etc etc etc.

You forgot to mention that he held the biggest rural demonstration in 10+ years in Hungary, what is shown on the last few frames. Approximietly 10-20k people gathered in Debrecen, in one of the biggest Fidesz strongholds

He'll get sued over "something" or will have "trouble", all of the sudden.

Little inconvenience during the elections that the Hungarian people have to remind Orban that his days are numbered.
