A ratio is a comparison of the sizes of two or more quantities of the same kind by division, expressed in simplest form
Representation:
a : b or a/b , where a and b are terms of same unit
a:- antecedent(first term)
b:- consequent(second term)
Example: 2:3
1. 12:16 can be written as (3 × 4):(4 × 4) = 3:4
2. 3:2 ≠ 2:3
3. Quantities to be compared must be in the same units. (50kg
and 500g cannot be represented in ratio until the units are changed)
The ratio is 50:1/2=100:1
4. To compare two ratios, convert them
into equivalent like fractions
Simplify the ratio 1/3 : 1/8 : 1/6
Solution:
L.C.M. of 3, 8 and 6 is 24.
1/3 : 1/8 : 1/6
= 1 × 24/3 : 1 × 24/8 : 1 × 24/6
= 8 : 3 : 4
