This is a band from Ireland. The song is about the ongoing "troubles" = war within Ireland between religious groups. Two 12 year old boys were killed in a bombing. The lead singer Delores O'Riordan wrote this stunning protest song. Unfortunately Ms O'Riordan died in 2018. This song has been covered many times. Her vocal techniques in this song include keening which is an expression of mourning. ☮️💜🤘

It is a sad song based on real events that themselves had a long backstory

The backstory is that after 800 years and an uprising in 1916 (referenced in the song) Ireland gained independence from Britain in 1922 becoming the Republic of Ireland. However 6 counties in the North remained under British rule becoming Northern Ireland - part of the UK. A disasterous mix of people half of whom saw themselves as Irish half as British.

This might have worked had the British not allowed and encouraged a very nasty system of apartheid against the Irish Catholic part of the population in Northern Ireland. This led to civil rights marches one if which ended disasterously in 1969 when British soldiers opened fire and killed Irish Catholics.

This became the catalyst for 25 year of bloody conflict which led to over, 3500 deaths. The IRA was formed with the aim of removing the British and reuniting Ireland. The UVF was formed on the other side. The whole thing was known as the troubles. It became a bloody violent mess. The killings were vicious on both sides - people shot in front of their children, bombings vicious hated getting worse on both sides

Thats the backstory this is the context of the song. In 1993 there were real hopes of peace. A more moderate British govt, the involvement of the EU and US, the recognition of dual cultural identity in one place and the fact ordinary people on both sides were sick of killing on both sides led to it looking very likely that the IRA would declare a ceasfire.

But not everyone was happy and in the midst of that very real hope part of the IRA planted a bomb that killed two children.

That is the event this song refers to. The fact the bombers didn't speak for the Irish population (not me not my family). That they were still fighting an old different war (same old theme since 1916). That nothing was worth the heartbreak.

Four years later a peace treaty was signed. The Good Friday Agreement. Northern Ireland finally gained peace and prosperity tho that is now threatened by Brexit

Yup Unfortunately you are old enough to understand this just like Other Version Zombie more relevant today than it was back then and they're still fighting but with way more powerful accurate weapons like drones which is a new add on in badwolves that everyone likes in that version so it updates what Dolores was trying to say all those years ago about if nothing changes nothing changes but us and more ways to wipe us out that's why today especially this song means way more than people realize it means even back in 1994 it was about kids being killed in another senseless war that could have been discussed diplomatically but since WW1 the world has been on another collision course of epic disaster like Dolores talks about here in my favorite song of hers Zombie.

This song has more meaning than all the songs combined in the last 10 years which unfortunately says something about where are species has been heading since 1916 like she said in this powerful song just like my other meaningful favorite song from 1994 Keep talking from Pink Floyd which are society has stopped for along time now and if we don't wake up fast there will be another World War if we keep up the track we're heading on it's a recipe for catastrophe on all levels now never thought possible in 2023 but like me and my WW2 veteran family members that are still alive think specially after the last 3 years if eye awakening moments of nobody saw coming until it was stearing us right in the face and we couldn't look away no more but unfortunately it was to late another massive war in Europe that could have been avoided from communication and diplomacy once again we chose poorly

It's like one my favorite songs Folks Keep Talking from my favorite bands Pink Floyd when Stephen Hawking did his famous Commercial in the 90s saying as long as Mankind keeps communicating the human race still has a chance to turn it around no matter how close we get to another catastrophic global disaster like now we face in 2023.
