The open-toe foot is so much fun you might wonder why you'd ever use an all-purpose foot! The answer is simple and twofold: firstly, the open-toe foot does not make contact with as much of the feed dogs as an all-purpose foot does, which means that in regular sewing you could run into situations where the fabric feeds more poorly under the presser foot. Secondly, the open design of the presser foot doesn't support the fabric from the topside nearly as well as an all-purpose foot (which itself falls behind the standard set by a straight stitch foot), and so the thread can tend to pull the fabric upwards when the take-up lever tries to set the stitch, and combined with the less positive feed dog engagement, this can lead to puckered seams on lighter materials.

That said, if you know the limitations of the open toe foot and are confident that you can work around them, then you absolutely can use it for regular sewing.

Thanks for being so OPEN with us. 🤭. I think that I might try this foot with some free motion experimentation. Hmmmm. 🥰

Wow! I’m so glad I came across this video by chance. I’m hoping to make several kimonos (my baby lock serger stopped working though 😓💔 and I don’t know when I’ll get it bad) and I wanted to either do trim on the hem of the sleeves or around the neckline and I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out how I was going to go about that! I’m hoping to do velvet trim, lace, maybe satin blanket binding. I know I won’t need the foot for the binding, but I’m so excited! I honestly had no idea what that foot was for. Maybe I knew in the past? I’m picking sewing up after a year - year and a half break and I was a beginner/intermediate sewer so I have to relearn quite a bit.

Thank you! I have two satin stitch feet. They’re labeled F (zigzag satin stitch foot) and F2 (open toe foot). Is there a time I would choose one over the other, or are they interchangeable? Both are clear and easy to see through.
