Russia has used its Kinzhal hypersonic missile for the first time in Ukraine on Friday.

The Russian defense ministry said Saturday,
"The Kinzhal aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse containing missiles and aviation ammunition in the village of Deliatyn in the Ivano-Frankivsk region".

Russia has never before admitted using high-precision weapons in combat.

President Vladimir Putin had announced the system in an annual state-of-the-nation address in 2018.
The Kinzhal was among several latest-generation strategic weapons that Putin said at the time could overcome any U.S. missile defenses.

In this video Defense Updates analyzes why the first-ever combat use of Kinzhal hypersonic missile was a message to NATO?

As a non-American, I appreciate the way you provide metric equivalent measures.

I'm glad to hear the old narrator voice back. I don't know if this one is computer-generated, but it sounds so much better. Thanks guys!

Ive heard from an unconfirmed report that the target was a secret ( during the Soviet times ) nuke bunker. After the fall of the USSR, it became a weapons bunker for Ukraine. Problem was, Russia does not have a bunker buster for contested air space so a hypersonic was the only was to take it out.
Again unconfirmed, as is so much with this war; but the logic seems sound.

4:37 "Top Gun" taught you wrong. Going ballistic in USAF means that the projectile is in motion on inertia alone / no propulsion. You probably meant to use the phrase "the missle launches"

You can see how desperate Russia is to save face

How do they fly to the target from Kaliningrad? Over Poland?

Doesn't seem to be helpful when it comes to the five (so far) Russian generals getting greased.

" But some experts have said Russia might be exaggerating the abilities of its hypersonic arsenal. . . .Military analyst Pavel Felgenhauer suggested that the use of the Kinzhal would change little on the ground in Ukraine. 'Fundamentally this does not change anything on the battlefield, but it gives a certain psychological and propaganda effect to scare everyone, ' he said.

Russia is trying everything they can since Ukraine is holding them back. Just goes to show how bad the Russian military and their equipment is.

The Kinzhal is a “hypersonic missile” under the exact same definition that makes a WW2 German V2 missile “hypersonic”. It is a 30 year old missile and is not in the same class as the modern glider or cruise hypersonic missiles.

The real message to NATO is not Kinzhal, which is essentially a conversion of Iskander missile (the main difference is the range, the Kinzhal has up to 3000km range compared to ~500km of Iskander).
The real message (and I am pretty sure some people are paying attention) is Avangard, a high hypersonic (20-25M) maneuverable glider re-entry vehicle . Unlike yet to be completed/tested AGM-183A, it's *ICBM* re-entry vehicle which NATO has nothing to counter with. And it's *already deployed*, though in small numbers. Yet.

Very intresting name of this missile, Kinzhal is a 2 edged dagger in Chechen language.

The advantages of a hypersonic missile are many:
1. Speed. No time for the enemy to react (either leave or activate/track with air defenses).
2. Undetectable by radar. At mach 10, the temperatures developed (friction of air with the surface of the missile, almost 3 000 Celsius) cause the air enveloping the missile to become plasma. Plasma is basically ionized gas which absorbs all electromagnetic radiation, thus rendering the object invisible to radar.
3. The kinetic energy at hypersonic speeds is huge. It is estimated that the kinetic energy of a Kinzhal is more than 4, 000Kg of TNT, making it ideal to hit well fortified ammunition stores and command centers deep in the ground (compare this with its conventional warhead which has a weight of 500Kg). In other words, much higher penetration than conventional missiles.
4. The Kinzhal is air launched and the range stated is apparently the combined range of the missile and the carrier aircraft. Thus it is 2000Km when carried by the MiG-31K and 3000Km when carried by the Tu-22M3.
5. It is claimed to be able to maneuver during its flight to avoid air defenses (as if that is necessary).

1- WWII Nazi V2 Rockets were hipersonic on the final fase
2- Because of the plasma formed around the missile in hipersonic speeds its unable to access any external guidance aides or use radar, IR or image system to correct its trajectory.
3- To target ships or any mobile targets it has to reduce the speed to update the position of the target and can be destroyed by anti missile system.
4- This "hipersonic missile" is NOTHING MORE THAN PROPAGANDA as most of Russia and China military equipment, exactly as their "5th generation stealth fighters"

This missile is hypersonic only at 20km altitude! Just to know)

"The Kinzhal marks the beginning of the hypersonic weapons era"
Virtually all ballistic missiles that entered service within the last 30 years are hypersonic. The US' Skybolt ALBM also had a top speed of mach 12 and it was set to enter service in 1963. It was roughly the same size as the Kinzhal.

So it looks like it would be easiest to defeat this missile, by destroying the MiG-31Ks while the missile is still on board.

The SR71 was nearly hypersonic at 2200+ mph. The X15 had a top speed of Mach 6.7

Just because Russia says they used a hypersonic weapon does not mean they actually did.
