In this video I will show you a very introductory book on computer science. This book is meant for beginners and I think most people can learn a lot of stuff from this book! It is called Everything You Need to Ace Computer Science and Coding in one Big Fat Notebook and it was published by Workman Publishing.

It’s a great book. I’ve been in computing since 1975. I walked out of my high school graduation, and straight into an internship as a junior programmer in Fortran for an architecture firm and I’ve never looked back. I’ve been just about everything you can be, from software engineer to Director of Information Technology, to VP of Advanced Technology to what I do now. I work from home doing IT for small and medium sized companies.

So I’ve been at it for a while and I kinda collect computer books similarly to the way you collect math books. I don’t get tired of frequently learning what I thought I knew all over again. This book was great fun for me, although some items I would contest the accuracy on, but those items are not terribly important.

Note… controversial opinion: There is no such thing as Computer Science (as we know it). What we call computer science is in reality a branch of engineering. It should be called Computer Engineering.

There should be classes called Mathematics For Software Engineering included in the Computer Engineering major. Those classes should be taught by the Math Department.

What we engineers do with computers is not science. We are not studying the physical world to understand computers. We (humans) made them. We know everything about them. We are constantly improving them.

Think of it like this. Scotty was. It a Starship Scientist. He was an engineer. His work certainly incorporated known science but he was primarily taking science like math and physics and applying it to masking the big space boat go.

That is what software developers do. We apply principals of math and science and data structures and algorithms to solve real world problems and apply computers to tasks to make the world a better place.

In short, the phrase Computer Science has always been a pet peeve for me. Spread the word.

I wish the publishers made another book like this for calc 1-3 and market it towards high schooler or anyone who wants to learn calculus. When book looks so friendly like this, make me feel comfortable and keep on reading. As a math major, i might buy this book, looks really fun book to collect.

I am a fully grown man, and I am in college, pursuing computer science, and all of these books are incredible. A similar quality text in each respective subject is at least twice as expensive, and sometimes 3-5 times as expensive. Really terrific stuff.

That actually _does_ look like a great book (just like the previous book you showcased in the Big Fat Notebook series) and it really makes sense to bring middle-schoolers up-to-speed with computer science At least the very basics. I mean, we use computers every day, might as well learn what makes them tick!

I got this along with math and science books from Costco. I keep gifting these to my nephews/niece. In fact I have kept one for myself

I also bought that book, and I agree completely that it's a great introduction for a general audience, for all ages. This is coming from a former Unix system administrator, who used scripting to automate many aspects of my job maintaining dozens of systems and servers. I wish this book existed when I started out.

I despise doing math but subscribing to this channel was a must. I only have to do one calculus class as a bio major but Math Sorcerer is a great person to listen to.

This is actually a book that I really needed but I didnt know that I needed it.

Thank you for the great summary I will probably buy it in this year

So cool, I actually had bought this book along with another one from the same publisher when you reviewed it, having the possibility of taking knowledge from one source really helps me out, I'm glad you have reviewed it. Could you talk more about math and computer science or coding in the future?

This is fascinating.
When I was in 'middle school' (we called it jr. high school in those days) the only computers we knew about were HAL 9000 and Colossus: The Forbin Project.
These were cautionary tales indeed, but in sixth grade I had actually helped beta test the Plato Learning System on the Illiac at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, however my experience wasn't typical.
Of course, I've been fascinated with computers ever since I saw Julie Newmar as "My Living Doll, ' an android robot who complained that her computers couldn't process some of the social situations she was running up against. I asked my dad what a computer was and he explained that they were usually big calculating machines that took up whole rooms, much like the Illiac I later became familiar with.
I never got my own computer until after I had been in college for a couple of years.
I learned everything I ever needed to know about computer science on that old Atari 800.

I'm sorry. I HATE Python.
To me it just feels like structure for the sake of structure. I thought we were done with that when we got beyond punchcards and COBOL.
But I guess you've gotta start somewhere and as far as computer languages are concerned, it really doesn't matter where you start because there's always another language that's easier, or faster, or more appropriate and so very much of what you learned in your previous language will transfer almost directly into your new language or else will trip you up completely, but that's where the fun is. Vive la difference!

This reminds me of an old TV show on nickolodeon, called "Ned's declassified school survival guide" or something similar
