Practice is key. Reading regularly will help. Articles and even novels can help teach you good grammar. Reading is nice because you digest the language at your own pace. Seeing the verbs written can also help the forms stick in your head. :)

Are you speaking specifically about "could"? That modal verb helps us express ability (I could do that when I was younger) and possibility (Where could she be?). We also use "could" for suggestions (You could try writing an apology note).
