The alcohol itself keeps those things from burning, too. Without water, when the alcohol burns up, it will start burning the item. This is how lamps and lanterns work. The wick wicks up your fuel (kerosene, alcohol, even olive oil) and when you light the end it's actually the fuel that burns. That's why the wick lasts so long. Also, If you make a little bowl out of paper, you can actually boil the water in it. I've even seen the guys and Dual Survival boil water in a plastic bottle.

The great thing about this trick, is that people don't usually think that a liquid or a gas can burn.
