How to repair damaged drywall paper- Torn drywall - Blistered drywall brown paper repair- Quick tip. In this DIY drywall video I'm gonna show you how to repair damaged drywall paper. The damage to the drywall paper is most commonly caused after wallpaper removal, after removing a wall mirror and the mirror mastic or in this case that I'm gonna demonstrate how to repair the torn drywall paper after removing baseboard for new flooring and not scoring the caulk line at the top of the baseboard before removal.

First thing you need to do is remove all loose drywall paper from the area. Now here's the crucial tip you're going to need to seal the brown drywall paper with a product called Gardz. This will keep the brown drywall paper from blistering when you apply a joint compound to the area.
***Warning** if you do not use this tip, you'll end up with blistered drywall patches!

Good luck with your DIY drywall repair project and thanks for watching! -Paul

I really appreciate how you get to the point right away. So many people like to talk a lot before they get to the point. I'll definitely subscribe. Thanks for the info!

Kilz in a spray can works too. I've used it on several jobs and had no issues whatsoever.
As long as the paper gets sealed and dries in a short amount of time, use what you have on hand.
I've done several repairs where time was critical.

My Sheetrock has been coming off in sheets, and now we see it’s got mildew behind it. We’re basically down to seeing whatever is under the brown paper. What do we do? Replace all the drywall? Clean it with mildew cleaner, then the stuff you used, then mud, then primer and paint?
I’m not only terrified of the mildew, as it’s in several walls, but the extent to which this has to be repaired!!

New subscriber with a Question: I cleared the brown paper, BUT I have a lifted edge of my celling where the paint/skim/paper has disconnected from the ceiling drywall. I can't cut more or Ill have to remove a kitchen cabinet that connects to the ceiling. How can I reattach that portion back to the drywall? Im thinking drywall screws and glue(or caulking), paint over it with zizzner primer, put fiber tape and mud over the edge. What do you think?

Paul you mentioned using primer after the repairs on spots repaired with Zinsser 1-2-3 before painting. Are you saying to use this primer over the dryed compound after you sand it but before paint??

I had new prehung interior doors put in and the dry wall peeled around the door casings. I used scraper but it's not smooth. Lots of Tufts and uneven layers. Should I send it to flatten it before putting on joint compound?

Hi, , , I always use kilz oil primer to bond where paper is lost, then tape the spot. I don't like paper backing being gone the gypsum inside has no strength from falling apart especially in a ceiling.

FYI, there is a product I just saw on youtube called Roman PRO-999 which is a lot cheaper than GARD

Hi, I was trying to paint a bedroom wall, and while prepping the wall, I noticed the most superficial paint together with joint compound the previous owner applied lifts and peels. There are also spider cracks in multiple areas in the room that go all the way down to the dry wall paper. I assume the cracks were caused by condensation, which I recently addressed by replacing all the insulation in the house. Whoever painted the last time applied sheetrock everywhere to hide the drywall cracks, obviously without applying sealer like you, so I can feel looseness of compound together with paint in many areas. I am scraping where the cracks are visible, as well as where I can feel the looseness of compound. But what if the entire room was covered with compound without the sealer? Where it looks smooth and tight can eventually becomes problem? In that case, I will basically have to scrape compound from the entire walls which is so much work. Do you think I can assume where it looks okay now is intact enough and I can apply a new coat of paint over it ? Please tell me your professional opinion. Thank you.

Can you do a video on larger damage like the one you showed in the short clip from wallpaper removal? Huge job and uneven walls coming up

Can you follow up with the texture after the drywall fix. My sheet rock is peeling a bit by a window next to bathtub. And for some stupid reason the builder who built the house Had the tape also on the bronze metal of the window and painted it.
