Your Trap and Roll SUCKS... Here's The Fix

Hey guys! Welcome to Chattanooga Jujitsu Academy with Mickey Swofford. Today, we've got an exciting topic for you: "Fix Your Fundamentals - Trap and Roll / Elbow Escape!" This technique is one of the main two escapes we use from underneath the bottom of the mount position, and mastering it will greatly improve your Jiu Jitsu game. So, let's dive right in and break it down into easy-to-follow sections.

First, we'll talk about the grip, the lift, and the follow-through. These technical aspects are crucial for executing the escape successfully. When you're on your back, make sure to have your palms down to protect your face, and let's get ready for the grip.

The grip involves reaching underneath your opponent's arm and grabbing either their gi or elbow. Securely clamp down to trap their same-side leg. Now, focus on your lift. This is where many people make a common mistake. Instead of lifting and rolling sideways, which is ineffective, try this: Turn your head towards the mat and curl your body as you lift, making your opponent's head fall towards the same side. This creates a powerful lift that sets up the escape.

Now, let's talk about the follow-through. As you lift, use your elbow to help push your opponent over the top, landing on your knees in a controlled manner. Your eyes should lead the way, continuously turning towards the ground to guide your movement.

Remember, if your opponent's hand is in the collar, you'll need to adapt the technique slightly to address the collar choke threat. This adds an additional layer of defense to your escape.

Timing is critical in executing this technique effectively. As your opponent's hands come back to you, initiate the trap and roll in one fluid motion. Practice the one-two lift instead of separate movements to ensure a seamless escape.

Mastering the trap and roll is essential in jujitsu. Without a strong foundation in this escape, you'll find it challenging to deal with skilled opponents. So, dedicate time to perfecting your bridge and hip escape - two fundamental movements that will serve you well in your jujitsu journey.

By practicing both the elbow escape and the trap and roll, you gain the ability to transition between escapes and stay ahead of your opponent's actions. Being proficient in these techniques will empower you to navigate various scenarios effectively.
