Privilege, Shame, and the Nonprofit Industrial Complex

In this video I offer a respectful critique of the framework of privilege, arguing that this is a liberal and individualist framework that leads to shame based shutdowns, defensiveness, and inaction. Rather than this being an unfortunate consequence of people rejecting these ideas, I argue that this is by design due to the function of the Nonprofit Industrial Complex and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion industry.

In this video, my aim is not to talk over or delegitimize the people who have used the framework or language of privilege to understand their experiences or how they relate to others. Rather, my hope with this video is to contribute to a conversation around how this language ultimately does not serve us, and to offer an alternative that is more based in the foundations laid by important Black Feminists and intersectionality scholars.

While I hope this video is helpful for you, please don't accept my word as the last time you think about this subject, and instead use it as a jumping off point to engage with other thinkers and perspectives.

This is an interesting perspective and it resonates with me. I was thinking about one thing you said - how a situation tends to be dominated by the types of privilege that aren't being talked about (or something like that). I've had a similar thought. I think there are always going to be types of privilege and marginalization that we, as a society and as individuals, are not aware of, and so if we only focus on the identities that are trendy to talk about in liberal culture in whatever era we are in, some people will inevitably get erased. I've seen this happen to some of my friends and it's painful. So your way of framing things makes a lot more sense to me than some of the other narratives I've observed.
