You let me know in the comments, what type of toxic people have you encountered in tech?

It shows insecurity. True professionals are not only solid in their tech skills, but also their tech mentorship abilities.

Hey man, you completely nailed it. It is those kind of people, geek, who feel insecure because their coding skills can now done by anyone who dont really have a computer science degree, so they get bitter and angry about it. They will even write article about how to code properly or how they will reject anyone how doesnt have a computer science degree.
What a waste of time.
And now with CHATGPT in the picture, things about to get very interesting, i mean very very interesting

I been writing code professionally for 30+ years now. I've worked for several companies and as an independent consultant. There are always going to be those who think you are a genius and those who think you have no idea what you are doing. My advice, ignore them both because neither is right. LOL! Sometimes you are the smartest person in the room and sometimes you aren't but NEVER let anyone treat you like you and skills are not an asset.

The ultimate gatekeeping I've been seeing lately are the entry level positions requiring 2-3 years of experience. Like how do you need experience to get experience 🤔

The gate keeping is so crazy! The Ego is even crazier! I have been on the side interviewing devs that would be working with me and on the other side being an interviewee and its disappointing how some companies make it difficult to get in the door. Don't give up on yourself if you are struggling to get a job because when God says YES, these people can't tell you no.

Okay, but let’s be real. Software developers are usually people who don’t really know what they’re doing as they code all day. Software engineers, on the other hand, are usually people who code all day and don’t really know what they’re doing.

I'm not going into coding anymore but instead going into UX/UI. I hope the same thing isn't over in that group.

I used to have a couple friends, super smart and brilliant coders (I think, lol), but they were definitely the toxic “RTFM NOOB LOL” types. Which is what mainly dissuaded me from pursuing coding professionally. Now that im older and disconnected from them, I’m really interested in it again! Never let others prevent you from exploring your interests!

I haven't seen a microphone that long since Bob Barker. I kept waiting for you to ask us for a starting bid. Great Video.

I worked in satcom same shit nerd culture has a lot of awesome things too it unfortunately quite a few people feel insecure about being a nerd so they hyper fixate on their own intelligence with the end result being putting others down

Gatekeeper in tech (Salesforce consulting specifically) caused a dude to bully me in a multi-paragraph letter telling me how worthless I am because I earned 11x highly-technical certifications in 7 months. I felt shocked 😳 but discovered that it’s common.

I think why gatekeeping happens is seeing a huge influx of competition. I know personally you have felt this including me that when there are 20k new batch of software engineers coming out of college, there is only so much that a company can hire. Roughly half of these degree holders don't even use their degree (some go under business, finance, real estate, start-ups, etc.) which makes me confused as to why they even when down the rabbit hole.

This is something that needed to be said. It's more than just bitterness, it's insecurity. It's been a thing for a very long time. Unfortunately, this is nothing new. I've been in IT for over 30 years, but not in coding (I've been working on that off and on for about 7 years, though). If you have the interest and the drive, as with anything else, just go for it. Fuck whoever else thinks different. In the end, those jokers don't realize that the next crop of people have to take the mantle or otherwise, when the vets fade away, the industry suffers and dies right along with them.

I am late to this video, but I want to second the Udacity recommendation. I started my career with Udacity and it changed my life. Sr. Software Engineer 5 years later.

I'm glad you spoke up about this because the toxicity in coding community is ridiculous and idiotic and I 100% agree: if you are going to code, you must have a progressive mind.

As much as I have interviewed, taken 2+ hours test, etc you realize how these interviewers don't know much more than you. If anything they are looking up the answer on stack overflow and pretending they came up with the solution on the top of the dome.
