Lib Dems conference: can Davey’s party replace the Conservatives?

Here at the Liberal Democrat conference in Brighton, many delegates are still euphoric at their party's haul of seventy two seats at the General Election.

But behind the scenes some are wondering what they should do with that success. Should they limit their ambitions to holding onto their new gains? Or do they have a chance of winning enough seats at the next election to become the main opposition party?

Triumphalism from a party that came a poor fourth in the popular vote to Reform. Yes, they got 72 seats to Reform’s 5 but 4.117m votes against 3.519m means that Reform polled 17% more votes. It’s also very bad news for the SW, the LibDems stronghold so, like the pensioners will not be on Labour’s heartland radar.

Once upon a time, this party was led by Palmerstone, Gladstone, Asquith and Lloyd George.

If they could see what their party is like now, they’d weep. Even Ashdown and Kennedy would make a better fist of running this party.
