MUME: An Amazing, Free, Lord of the Rings multi-player RPG

I want to introduce you to MUME, a free online multi-player RPG that's been running since 1991, set in JRR Tolkien's universe of Middle Earth, where Lord of the Rings takes place. This is a "MUD", a genre of multi-player games which are entirely text based. This requires some imagination but brings some of the most fascinating game-play experiences possible. This looks really interesting. Kinda like dwarf fortress but a lot more beginner friendly. Would love a starting guide of sorts. Does starting as ork or elf lock you into a faction, similar to WOW ? So all orks are in the evil Sauron faction for example?

MUME 9 was recently released 🎉 and there have been a whole heap of changes in the past year, particularly new and changed sub-races and areas.
Last year for the 30th birthday there were a whole load of players on, and the same is expected this time around. 🥳
