Imagine dying bc you didn't wanna have a skill issue

Imagine roasting the newbies, but then get a video solely dedicated to roast you from an experienced fencer.

"using a handguard is such a skill issue" - guy who died because he couldn't get past the opponent's handguard

Isn't this kinda like saying "Or instead of using a seatbelt, you could just learn to drive"?

These battles were about survival, not showing off your skill.

"Why use a sword at all, just learn to perfectly deflect blows with your hands and to then disarm or disable your opponent bare-handed."
Like, c'mon, complex hilts, like any protective measure, are there because you can never be good enough to not need them. Even if you're the best fencer in the world, there will be moments where you slip up. It'd be foolish to forego measures to prevent that from becoming a disaster for you.

The year is 2249, projectile firearms have been rendered obsolete by advanced cybernetics and laser based energy weapons, the layperson's understanding of firearms comes from Call of Duty Black Ops LVII. A youtuber discussing historical body armour posts a video discussing a world war 3 era military plate carrier, they receive a comment that reads "why not simply avoid the bullets?"

Forethought is a skill too. More people should train it.

To add to what youre saying. Another way to look at this comes from olympic pistol events, believe it or not. The guns used in some olympic level events aren't "real" guns that use gunpowder, because gunpowder is harder to precisely control than compressed air from a tank. It would be wrong to say that these athletes should just "git gud" with conventional firearms; these athletes are so good that a conventional firearm will hamper their performance, and we want to measure the skill of the athlete, not the inconsistency of his hardware. Complex hilts do the same thing; they allow the fencer to demonstrate their skill unimpeded by ineffective hardware. Skill isn't a compensation for bad tools; good tools elevate skill.

It also acts like a buckler, creating a "cone of defense" that protects much of your arm and body.
(A cup hilted rapier is perhaps actually just a very spiked buckler😅)

"Why learn to defend yourself, simply don't die."

Everyone makes mistakes, so the best strategy is to minimize the damage those mistakes might do. Hence the guard.

Yea if skill is a non-issue, everyone would use swords with no crossguards either. We create hardware to give ourselves advantages and it would simply be ignorant to not use them if we lack the skill. Or even if we have the skill, a lot of the time why not use the thing to make it even easier??

If you are really skilled you should fight naked, using nothing but your left pinky toe

Gotta love when ppl say something like "just do _" when they completely misunderstand the situation at hand
