How To Hold A Walleye

Fishing Pro Jeff "Gussy" Gustafson shares the best practice when handling a walleye.

Here's how to optimize your photos and protect the health of the fish if you're planning to release!

Here are some more tips:

-Hold your breath while your getting your photo taken so you know when to release the fish. When you need to breathe, the fish does!

-Unhook the fish in the net and only lift it out once you have your camera ready.

We at Sunset Country encourage sustainable catch and release practices, especially of trophy fish in our region. As always, read the regulations before you head out and tight lines!

Nice video. What do you recommend when you catch a really small walleye. A few weeks ago I caught some really small walleyes where I felt they were to small to gill. would you grab them by the body?

Holding Them just on the belly also works too, they don’t move or
Anything, just rest your hand on the belly and they stay there

I release most and I make a point to never hang them even for a moment.

Too complicated. The pan holds them just fine.
