As an idea to help motivate them (and a cool video idea): You could use an Arduino mounted on the back wooden post that tracks the number of rotations that the running wheel makes, then have code that randomly chooses a number of turns before it triggers the release of a treat. E.g. To start, you could have the Arduino randomly choose a number between 1-10 (let's say it chooses 5), then after 5 rotations of the wheel it sends a signal to a treat dispenser to release a goldfish snack. After releasing the snack, the code in the Arduino generates a new random number between 1-10. Over time you can increase the random number range to 1-20 or even 1-30 so that they have to do more work until they get a treat.

Impressive, I didn't know how you were going to attach it until the end, you attached it like my rats wheel, it took a while to build, but I am sure it is very satisfying.
