DKB
I personally use Deutsche Kreditbank. DKB has no monthly fees if you have a regular income of 700 Euro per month. Their basic account comes with a free debit card. The DKB bank exists already more than 30 years so expect things to run a bit more smoothly than with some Neo Banks. DKB is an online bank and does not have brick-and-mortar branches. On the other hand the DKB app looks old-school and is in the German language only. A major downside is that they only accept your application if you have a positive credit score. Now new arrivals in Germany don't have a national credit score yet so they cannot apply for a DKB account. Do not apply if you live in Germany for less than a couple of years.
Here is a list of banks that don't require a registered address in Germany and that all have a straightforward application.
N26
N26 properly makes for a great starter bank but I know someone whose account got hacked and he had a hard time getting his money back so I can't recommend N26 although it is very popular in Germany.
ING
ING is a great bank with excellent service and low fees. Probably my favorite on this list besides DKB. Only downside: everything is in the German language, no official English support unfortunately.
Revolut
Revolut's free standard plan is great for starters in Germany. The conditions are:
- free debit card but one-time delivery fees apply,
- free withdrawals within limits,
- currency exchange in 30 countries.
bunq
bunq is another bank where you can open an account within minutes there is a monthly fee though but otherwise a great starter bank with full English support.
1822Direkt
The 1822Mobile plan is just great if you have an official address in Germany.
Pros:
- open a checking account in only eight minutes,
- free cash withdrawals in many grocery shops in Germany,
- free Apple pay support, debit card only costs 6 Euro per year.
Cons:
- website and app in German language only,
- limited amount of free cash withdrawals at ATMs.
That was a roundup of the best German banks for expats in Germany in 2023.
