The move that Schopenhauer made from Kant is to simply assert that the thing-in-itself is "one" since it cannot have multiplicity as exists prior to representation and so must stand 'outside' (so to speak) space and time. Likewise it is not conditioned by the principle of sufficient reason and so has no cause.

This is a very logical move to make and brings his philosophy in close contact with the thought of Parmenides as well as the Hindu scriptures. Schopenhauer represented one of the earliest and most profound convergences of Eastern and Western thought, and it is somewhat tragic that today he is remembered largely for his pessimism while his metaphysics is consistently misunderstood.

Shopenhauer not believed that all world is just representation. He believed that all world is will who manifest itself as various representations. All will in every representation at the same time. And even time itself is just manifesting representation of will.

they told me this story while I was at Humboldt: that Hegel taught above Shaupenhauer and when Hegel would finish his lectures it was german tradition to bang your feet on the floor as applause... needless to say when Shaupenhauer heard the 'charlatan being praised it made him very very upset.
