Schopenhauer will always hold a special place in my heart. His writing were the turning point for me. No turning back.

Keeping Nietzsche’s giant moustache in mind adds something valuable to my interpretation of him

What I like about Schopenhauer is that he is not afraid to speak up against the unhealthy optimism that can poison our common sense, and instead he believes that because we all suffer, this is the key to viewing all people as equal.

I'm currently reading The Wisdom of Life and one can say that he prophesized his own fame. He wrote much about fame, and even went as far to say that the most precious kind of fame is the one that is acquired belatedly, since he thought that a great mind wouldn't be understood for its greatness until later generations.

Schopenhauer was a genius, and one of the greatest thinkers of all time. In my opinion, he was the first philosopher who really understood life and reality and what it meant. He will always be my favorite Philosopher.

He looks much older than 50 in that portrait.

I see Schopenhauer almost everywhere outside in the world.

Some people will in turn use the fact that Schopenhauer was young when he wrote his main work as an excuse to dismiss his logic. Relying on the old prejudice that youth were mutually exclusive with wisdom.

It's not unusual for people to publish major works when they are young, Kurt Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems were written when he was 24 years old, and there are plenty of other examples. I believe it was in this vein that Robert Oppenheimer tried to vex a young physicist by saying "You are so young and already you have done so little".

About to listen and study his works 26 right now. 🤷🏻‍♂️ He was right about a lot of things.

Currently listening to the World as Will and Idea and have read a few of his works. Truly a great mind, Kant owes the man for wiping his bottom.

I think he was a university student at that time

Schopenhauer writes beautifully.
His philosophy is more akin to literature and can bring tears like poetry.
His OTT pessimism is a sort of antidote to existential dread in that he doesn't interpret existence as meaningless but rather as having a very definite and concrete meaning, that meaning being deeply negative: a sort of paradoxical 'rescue' of meaning post religion.

I found his writings, while often touching, in the end as having something of humorous paradox about them.
I know the humour was unintended, but the splendid paradox is there for sure.

In later life he wrote about humour an placed paradox at the centre of his theory on the subject.
I wonder did the paradoxical "joke" at the centre of his own philosophy ever cross his mind?

I wonder if, later in life, Schopenhaur had any reservations or amendments to the "World as Will and Representation."
Nietzsche published "the Birth of Tragedy" at 28 and he definitely had a change of heart later on.

I certainly think it adds something to his philosophy. The suffering of the world can be understood be young and elderly people.

I think so many people never got into Shakespeare because of those horrible portraits of him on every high school textbook of his plays.
